Lawn signage refers to signs placed on a lawn/open spaced grass/big patch of land, typically for promotional, informational or decorative purposes. In other bigger countries, lawn signs are used for realtors to indicate properties for sale, lease, or rent. Whereas, in Singapore, our lawn signs are more permanent and for directional or branding purposes of the company. They can be made from various materials like metal or wood and are often secured with structural supports reinforced into the ground. Lawn signage, in other simpler terms, is what we call 3D sign.

As most of you should know, Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGIS) is Hyundai Motor Group’s open innovation lab that houses a vibrant ecosystem of researchers, technology, training providers and factory of the future. The center explores business ideas and technologies to revolutionise the customer experience and future mobility solutions to people and communities in Singapore with the aim of enriching their lives. This is one of their outdoor signs:
This project added on more unusual complexity for us as we required the use of an excavator to dig soil for the installation. This acts as an efficient way to ensure that the sign is anchored securely into ground, especially for larger or heavier signs. We will briefly look into the process below.
Site preparation: Firstly, identify the exact spot where the signage will be placed. Clear any debris, plants, or obstacles from the area.
Mark the digging area: Use supports, spray paint, or rope to mark the area that will be excavated. Ensure the markings align with the size and base of the sign.
Excavation: Our in-house excavator operator will use the machine’s bucket to dig a hole that is deep and wide enough to accommodate the sign’s foundation or posts. The size of the hole depends on the size and weight of the sign, as well as our local regulations for signage installations. The hole is typically deep enough to ensure stability against wind and other elements.
Placing the sign: Once the hole is dug, the sign’s base or posts are inserted into the hole. Some signs may require a concrete foundation, in which case concrete is poured around the base and allowed to set. This would require more time as the cement needs to be dried.
Backfilling: After the sign is properly positioned, the excavator can be used to backfill the soil around the base, compacting it to ensure stability. For concrete bases, this step happens after the concrete has cured.
Final adjustments: Once the soil is backfilled, level the surrounding area to ensure a clean, professional look.
Here’s how such a lawn sign/outdoor sign is made:
Material: Letters or logos made from weatherproof materials like acrylic and/or aluminium which are mounted on posts, structural base, or frames.
Design: The letters or figures could be large, bold, and raised from the ground, giving a 3D effect that creates depth. The color and font would be carefully chosen to catch attention, usually bold or matches the corporate colors.
Lighting (optional): Some 3D signs may be illuminated, either through LED backlighting or spotlights placed around the sign, to make it visible at night. This is if there is night traffic around the area.
Placement: Typically, these signs are anchored securely into the grass using supports or a heavy base, ensuring stability for safety purpose.
